A Study on Health Status and Medical Service Needs of the Elderly in Mongolia

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to present health and welfare service policy alternatives for the elderly by analysing the subjective health status and medical service needs of elderly people, who in Mongolian urban areas. This study was conducted from 18th of July until 23th of August, 2014 by distributing a questionnaire survey among 447 elderly people, who are 55 and older, live in Ulan Bator and Erdenet city. A suitable 440 response was used for the final statistical analysis such as frequency, chi squired analysis via SPSS Windows 23 version program.
The results are as follows: First, the most of elderly were aged 55-59 and they were graduated primary and middle school, married and live with their children. The average monthly income of their was less than $150, and national pensions and subsidies were the main source of income. Second, the elderly had some anxiety and discomfort due to illness and social environment. Most of them were suffered from chronic diseases such as hypertension, arthritis and heart disease for 3 months or more. When they have a health problem or diseases, they mainly were used local health and family medicine centers. There were differences in the health status of the elderly and use of health institutions according to their general characteristics such as their age, marital status, and income level. Third, most of the elderly were interested in self - health care and were mainly managed by diet and health checkups. They had a high demand on nursing hospital-sanatorium. Also there were differences in a interest on self-health care, health control ways, demand on health services according to their general characteristics.
The findings of this study is suggest that, there is need to be continued research on the elderly health status and health demands in Mongolia. It is believed to be helpful to improve advanced health care policies and qualified health services for the elderly.
